12 credit certificate

Any holder of at least a bachelor’s degree from an approved college or professional school can earn The Seattle University Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages for completion of twelve credits with a GPA of 3.0. EPDES 930 is a required class.

A Bachelor’s degree plus this certificate is a typical requirement for overseas employment.

S-TESL graduates with this level of training also find work in private language schools and community-based programs in the U.S.

How many courses do I need for the 12 credit certficate?

The 12 credit certificate requires EPDES 930 + 3 additional classes.
In the Four Week Intensive format, the four courses are predetermined (EPDES 930+931, 932, and 933).
In evening and online classes, students may select different electives to tailor their certificate to individual interests and needs. For example, classes such as Teaching English Pronunciation, Teaching English to Young Learners, and Teaching Business English can be useful courses. It is recommended that all certificate students take the Teaching Grammar (EPDES 932) class.

How long does it take to earn a 12-credit certificate?

This certificate can be earned in the Four Week Intensive format, or in the evening, or online. In the evening and online formats, students generally complete the certificate in two to four quarters.

Where can I teach with the 12 credit certificate?

Much depends on your background and other experience or training you bring to your job search. Also, employment conditions vary around the world. In general, overseas employers require a BA + 12 credit certificate. In the U.S., community organizations and private language schools also hire with this level of training.
