ABOUT ONLINE CLASSES

Online classes are designed for those who prefer the flexibility of online study. Online classes are asynchronous and consist of nine modules completed over a ten week quarter. Assignments are due on weekly and there is regular feedback from the instructor. Classes begin winter, spring, summer, and fall quarters. Students who study in the online format typically complete the twelve-credit certificate in two to four quarters.

While the majority of our online students are from Seattle, or other parts of Washington State, there have also been students studying in Puerto Rico, Chile, the Dominican Republic, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, China, Germany, Italy, and Saudi Arabia.

Research shows that the dropout rate is high in distance learning. In recognition of the challenges inherent in distance learning, the School of Teaching ESL has designed its online classes to maximize student success and learning.

Weekly due dates and frequent contact with an instructor help to keep students on track. Having contact time with an ESOL class makes your learning more meaningful.

Take a self-assessment of your ability to survive and enjoy the online format. This assessment is a very helpful tool when determining if the online format is a good fit for your situation.

Contact STESLinfo@seattleu.edu if you have specific questions about online requirements.

It is anticipated that you will spend six-eight hours on each course module each week, and about one-third of that time will be on a computer (typing and submitting assignments, doing web-searches, etc.).

You need to be a fairly self-sufficient student. Online courses can provide community and relationships with your classmates and your instructor, but not to the degree that you will find in on-ground courses. If your learning style means that you thrive in a classroom with colleagues of wide experiences and teachers with a wealth of information to share, you should take the on-ground classes if at all possible.

However, both instructors and students have noted that there is much more interaction and sharing in the online format than they thought there would be. In fact, the students state that they have had more instructor-input in the online format than in traditional on-ground classes. See Testimonials from students for more information.

You will work hard in the online classes. Online classes will not be less work that on-ground classes. You won't feel the presence of classmates to keep you going in the same way as you do in on-ground classes.

You will be expected to occasionally implement activities from your coursework with this group of students. The School of TESL may ask for verification of your teaching situation.
Please contact Bernice Ege-Zavala if you have questions about the contact time expectations.
  • Each Module must be finished within a week's time (with the exception of Module One which you have two weeks to complete). The entire online class (nine modules) must be finished within the 10-week schedule. Module Schedule
