Eligibility Requirements

Applicants for certificates programs must have at least a bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited college or professional school.

The applicant must be fluent in English listening, speaking, reading, and writing in order to be deemed qualified to teach English to Speakers of Other Languages.

Applicants for whom English is a second language must demonstrate their English proficiency by:

  • completion of a bachelor’s degree in English-speaking university or
  • completion of an approved intensive English language program, with approval from the S-TESL Director or
  • TOEFL score of 92; iBT (237 computer-based score, 580 paper-based score) or higher. Some allowance for lower scores may be given, with approval from the S-TESL Director. or
  • completing the S-TESL Reading/Writing proficiency test, with approval from the S-TESL Director.

Applicants who do not have a BA, may request a waiver from the Director. See BA Waiver for further information.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate the behaviors expected of a professional language teacher as outlined in the Student Code of Conduct. It is the student's responsibility to inform the instructor of any circumstances which may impact their ability to participate fully in class, to fulfill course requirements, or may interfere with their learning or the learning of others.
