Directorship

Bernice Ege-Zavala, Director

M.A. Linguistics, University of Arizona, taught German and ESOL to adults for 10 years in a variety of settings, including Edmonds Community College.

She is the co-author of The Prentice Hall Workbook for ESL Writers, co-chaired the 2000 WAESOL conference, and as an active volunteer has served on the boards of several private and public schools.

At S-TESL, she taught the ESOL class and in both the evening and intensive programs for over 10 years before becoming the Academic Director in late 2003 and Director in 2004. She has also developed and taught courses for the online program. She currently trains the teacher educators, gives monthly job seminars for S-TESL students, gives class demonstrations, serves as the liaison with Seattle University College of Education, and supervises all administrative aspects of the school.

Dr. Nancy Butler, Director Emeritus and Founder

Ph.D. in Russian History, University of Washington, Post-Master's Certificate in TESOL, Seattle University. She has taught English, Social Studies and Russian at the middle school level, history classes at the University of Washington, and spent one year doing post-doctoral studies in Moscow, Russia. She was the Director of Courses at ELS Language Center, Seattle, from 1977 until 1988, served as President of WAESOL from 1984 to 1986, taught adult ESL at North Seattle Community College and, in cooperation with Seattle University College of Education, laid the groundwork starting in 1985 for what would become S-TESL in 1990. She has made numerous presentations at state and international professional conferences. Now, she supervises the ESOL Endorsement Program and continues to update the ESOL course materials.

Personal Statement:

"I expect all of the teacher educators at the School of TESL to model our teaching philosophy. I want our teacher education classrooms to represent much of what our students' ESOL classrooms will be."

Kim Darcy, Admissions Director/Program Coordinator

B.A., Hotel and Restaurant Administration; Washington State University. Certificate in Meeting and Convention Planning; Washington State University. Kim has worked as Admissions Director since 1990. She maintains the electronic discussion list for graduates, manages student accounts, works closely with Seattle University with registration, admissions procedures, certification and manages S-TESL's financial affairs.

Administrative Staff

Treena Miller, Office Administrator/webmaster

Treena has worked for S-TESL since 2007. Treena is from British Columbia, Canada and has lived and worked in Israel, New Orleans, Vermont, New York City and Vancouver, BC. Treena manages the current student announcement server, maintains the S-TESL website and S-TESL graduate website, operates the S-TESL bookstore and is your front desk contact person when you visit S-TESL.
